Is Your Practice on Fire—or Burning Down? The Hidden Shift That Changes Everything

There’s a fine line between a practice that’s thriving... and one that’s quietly burning you out.

I’ve walked that line myself. For years, I was “successful”—booked out, respected, and delivering results for my patients. But inside, I was running on fumes. I couldn’t quite exhale, and the rhythm of my life and work felt more like survival than synergy.

It wasn’t until I shifted from a mindset of balance to one of rhythm that things truly changed.

If this idea of rhythm over balance is already stirring something in you, I explore it more deeply in a recent conversation with the American Acupuncture Council. In that interview, I share the lived experience behind this shift—how I moved from feeling quietly depleted in a “successful” practice to reclaiming clarity, resilience, and agency in my work.

Why Balance Doesn’t Work (and Rhythm Does)

In Traditional East Asian Medicine (TEAM), we don’t aim for perfect balance. We aim for harmony—a dynamic flow between forces. Yet many of us try to run our lives and practices as if we’re walking a tightrope: stay perfectly balanced, or fall.

Here’s the truth: rhythm is smarter than balance.

Rhythm is elastic. It allows for ebb and flow. It accounts for seasons, life stages, and the nonlinear nature of healing and business alike. And when you adopt a rhythm-based approach to practice, burnout isn’t inevitable—it’s optional.

Are You Running Your Practice—or Is It Running You?

When your practice is on fire (in the good way), you're energized. There’s a clear sense of purpose, creative flow, and spaciousness—even amidst the hustle.

When it’s burning down? You’re over-functioning, over-serving, and quietly resentful. You’re doing everything “right,” but it doesn’t feel right.

Calendar with circled rest days and work blocks

One of the simplest but most profound shifts I made was redefining success on my terms. No more trying to replicate what my mentors did. No more molding my days around fear-based decisions (“If I don’t say yes to this time slot, they won’t come back.”). Instead, I created parameters that honored my energy, values, and vision.

That’s how I reclaimed my practice—and helped dozens of other leaders do the same.

Rhythm, Resilience, and Redesigning Success

Resilience doesn’t mean pushing harder. It means restoring elasticity to your mind, your body, and your model.

It’s asking:

  • What season of practice am I in?

  • Where am I operating from fear or scarcity?

  • What would it look like to lead with clarity, rhythm, and self-trust?

These aren’t just mindset shifts. They’re operational shifts.
